The Auror Office houses an equally elite group of witches and wizards trained extensively in managing, mitigating, controlling and eradicating dark magics, and arresting or otherwise incapacitating those who use them. Aurors can be promoted from within the MLES, but it is preferable that they apply for the Auror Academy instead. Only those with exemplary N.E.W.T.s, resumes, and test results are considered for the Academy. Training takes place over two exhaustive years of year-round, six-days-per-week lessons (both at theory and hands-on) at the Academy and a third year as a ‘Junior Auror’. Those who survive as an Auror for long enough may be promoted to Senior Auror.

The Department of Magical Law Enforcement is located on Level Two of the British Ministry of Magic in London, England. The Department encompasses several offices, including that of the Aurors, the Magical Law Enforcement Squad, the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells, the Improper Use of Magic Office, and the Wizengamot. The newly-established NEAT Task Force also calls Level Two home.
